Program Title: Flat Baroque: High Brow Radio by Low Brow Folks
Description: In this episode, we feature La Boheme composed in 1895 by Giacomo Puccino to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. This four act opera is based on Henri Murger's 1851 novel, Scènes de la vie de bohème (1851) and is set in the Parisian Latin Quarter around 1830 with a focus on a young seamstress and her bohemian friends doing bohemian things.
This performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Herbert von Karajan was recorded in 1973 and features the voices of Luciano Pavarotti, Mirella Freni, Elizabeth Harwood, Rolando Panerai, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Gianni Maffeo.
