Description: In this episode, your listeners will enjoy Les contes d’Hoffmann or the Tales of Hoffman, an opera fantastique composed by Jacques Offenbach to a French libretto by Jules Barbier based on a couple of short stories by German Romantic era author E.T.A. Hoffman, the protagonist in our opera today.

Premiering at the Opera-Comique in Paris in 1881, this opera has a massive cast of characters including the title character Hoffman, a poet, Olympia an animatronical doll, Antonia, a young girl, Julietta, a courtesan, stella a singer, Lindorf, Coppelius, Miracle, Dapertutto, Andres, Nicklausse, Cochenille, Frantz, Pitichinaccio, Antonia’s father Crespel, Luther, and several students, a muse, an inventor and more.

The version of Hoffman presented here is a 1986 performance by the Orchestre National de France at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. It was conducted by Sieji Ozawa and starring Placido Domingo as the title character alongside Edita Gruberova and the voice talents of Claudia Eder, Andreas Schmidt, Gabriel Bacquier, james Moreris, Robert Gamill and more.
