Description: Join us for a midwinter journey into darkness. In this edition of Flat Baroque, we present Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele, the only opera Boito completed as both composer and librettist. This Faustian-themed Italian language four act opera with a prologue and epilogue premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1868 with Boito himself as conductor.
The production of Mefistofele presented here was recorded in Rome in 1957 with the Orchestra e Coro dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia conducted by Tullio Serafin. The performance stars Cesare Siepi, Mario del Monaco, Lucia Danieli and Renata Tebaldi.
The cast of characters includes Elena also known as Helen of Troy, Faust-an aged scholar, Margherita an young girl, Marta, her neighbour, Mefistoffle the devil, Nereo a greek elder, Pantalis, Helen’s companion, Wagner-Faust’s arrogant pupil, an astrologer among a chorus of cherubim, penitents, strollers, soldiers, students, hunters, villagers, witches, warloks, Sirens, Nerieids and others.
