Program Title: 2021-09-13 The Canadian Philosophy Show #528
Description: What sort of world has capitalism created? Philosopher Mark Fisher argued that the nature of this capitalist world, one that nearly all of humanity lives in, could be described by his theory of Capitalist Realism. An idea that goes well beyond the economic notions of capitalism we regularly associate with the term, Capitalist Realism encompasses not only the economic, but the social, cultural, and psychological. For Fisher, essentially every aspect of society is determined, manipulated, and accounted for by the capitalist system we live under--creating a world of repetition, conformity, anxiety, and alienation. What this leads to is a reality in which "it is easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism,” and where the "pervasive atmosphere" of capitalism hangs over and infuses itself with everything--clouding out the possibility of any alternative.
