Program Title: NewFound Records - Ep. 673 - NL Come Home Year 1966 for 2022
Description: Unless you’ve buried your head in the sand, you know that 2022 is Come Home Year in Newfoundland & Labrador. With the dreadful pandemic on the ropes, we’ve rolled out the welcome mat to Newfoundlanders & Labradorians and other tourists who’ve been stuck in their homes up-along for the past two years.

But, did you know that this is not the Province’s first Come Home Year? We had a gigantic one 56 years ago!!! Old timers like myself will remember seeing many billboards with the slogan... "We'll finish the drive in '65, thanks to Mr. Pearson"? And that’s what happened! By the end of that year a ribbon of smooth asphalt stretched 560 miles from Port aux Basques to St. John’s. So by mid 1966, modern motels and inns had sprung up; campgrounds & picnic sites were abundant.

Out came the red carpet... especially for expatriate Newfoundlanders who were eager to hop aboard their cars and return home to visit. For at long last they could drive the entire island without shattering their windshields, without tearing the bottom out of their car, without punching holes in their gas tank, and without choking on those dusty and bumpy gravel roads.

As we celebrate “Come Home Year ‘22”, this episode of New Found Records recalls the music of “Come Home Year '66”... a year when the fledgling local record industry really spread its wings. Local musicians knew the visitors would want souvenirs, and what better memento than an album of homegrown Newfoundland music. Throughout this episode you’ll hear long forgotten regional hits with a Come Home Year theme by Tom, Jim, & Garth (aka The Scotians) and by Dick Nolan. Plus we’ll treat you to folk music souvenirs by John White, The Terra Novans, Ray Walsh and others.

Unfortunately most of these pre-digital gems have been buried deep in vinyl oblivion for more than five decades. But we’ve rooted them out for you. So tune in and discover a great mix of local music from ‘66. And it’s all seasoned with a generous sprinkling of historical Come Home Year tidbits to boot!
