Program Title: The Mark Radio ep.21: In the Wake of the G20
Description: Toronto is starting to recover from its G20 hangover.
The graffiti has been scrubbed away, the broken windows replaced, and no evidence remains of the police cars set ablaze by black-clad protesters. And while the damage to the city is fixed, the damage to its reputation may be harder to patch up. Images of destruction burned across the world's media and YouTube, and now first-hand accounts of aggressive police tactics at peaceful protests seem ubiquitous.
So is the G20 the impetus of real solutions to global problems, or just to a costly photo op? Can the benefits of the summit outweigh the $1-billion costs?
Host(s): Chris Mitchell
Featured Speakers/Guests: Former prime minister and original G20 architect Paul Martin, on whether the summit has lived up to his original vision.
Mark Brawley, professor of international relations at McGill university, on why global summits aren't the best venue for reaching consensus – but why that shouldn't stop leaders from trying.
Nathalie Des Rosiers, General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, on how Canada should use the G20 as a learning opportunity.
Activist Jonah Hundert shares his experience of being locked in a cage for 20 hours after being arrested at a peaceful protest.
