Description: For this episode of NFR, we roll back the clock to the late 1950s in the tiny Newfoundland village of Terra Nova. A small boy tunes the family radio to the country songs of Nashville greats like Webb Pierce and Ernest Tubb. He knows that the accordion is THE instrument played in rural Newfoundland, but he picks the guitar… and he sings. He joins his first bands while studying in St. John’s where the legendary Lew Skinner discovers him. Before long, they’re in a Nashville recording studio and the young Terra Novan is fronting the province’s top country band.
Next stop, Toronto. Awards came quickly, Canada’s Top New Country Artist, two Juno wins. There were a string of national TV appearances and a CBC TV series. And in September of 2010, sixty years after his birth, he became the first musician from Newfoundland and Labrador to be inducted into the Canadian Country Music Association Hall of Honour. The little boy from Terra Nova has taken his place alongside the country’s greats like Wilf Carter, Hank Snow, Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, and Anne Murray.
Today, the NewFound Records Radio Hour pays tribute to Eddie Eastman.
