Description: In this episode, we present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, or The Marriage of Figaro, a four act comic opera composed in 1786 to an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo da Ponte.
Based on the second stage comedy, La folle journee in the Figaro trilogy written by Pierre Beaumarchais, Le nozze di Figaro first premiered in Vienna at the Burgtheatre in May of 1786. It tells the story of two servants, Figaro and his beloved Susanna and their plans to marry and how they foiled the efforts of their philandering boss Count Almaviva to Seduce Sussana and teach him lessons in fidelity and how not to be a creepy employer.
The version of Le Nozze di Figaro we will listen to today was performed in 1955 by the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus with the Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra conducted by Vittorio Gui and features the voice talents of Sena Jurniac, Sesto Bruscantini, Gwyn Griffiths, Rise Stevens, Graziella Scuitti, Franco Calabrese and more playing a large cast of characters including Count Almaviva, his wife Rosina, her maid Susanna, Almaviva’s valet Figaro, the count’s page Cherubino, Dr. Bartolo and his housekeeper Marcellina, Basilio a music teacher, Don Curzio a judge, Antonio the Gargender and his daughter barbarina who are also uncle and cousin to Susanna along with a chorus of peasants, villagers and servants.
