Description: This episode features Leos Janacek’s Jenufa, otherwise known as Her Stepdaughter, a three act opera based on the play written by Gabriela Priessova.
First performed at the National Theatre in Brno Chechoslovakia in 1904, Jenufa is one of the first operas written in prose and the Janacek himself also wrote the Czech-language libretto.
Set in a Moravian villiage in the nineteenth century, the opera has a number of characters including the title role Jenufa written for a soprano. There is also, Steva Buryja-father of Jenufa’s secret unborn child, Laca Klemen, Steva’s half-brother who is in liove with Jenufa, Kostelnicka Buryjovka, Jenufa’s Stepmother, Grandmother Buryjobka, Starek-the mill foreman, the Mayor, the Mayor’s wife, Karolka, and a chorus of military recruits, servants, girls, villagers, musicians.
Recorded in 1982, the performance we will listen to today was conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras at the Sofiensaal in Vienna featuring the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the voice talents of Elisabeth Soderstrom, Vera Soukupova, Jindra Pokorna, Dalibor Jedlicka, Wieslav Ochman, Eva Randova, Peter Dvorsky, and others.
