Description: In this episode, we have another classic from Gaetano Donizetti. This opera buffa, or comic opera entitled Don Pasquale has an Italian libretto written by Angelo Anelli and believed to be completed by Giovanni Ruffini. Don Pasquale premiered at the Salle Ventadour in Paris is 1843.
The performance featured here was performed at the Prinzregententheater in Munich in January 1962. Conducted by Meinhard von Zallinger, this performance of Don Pasquale was performed by the Bavarian State Orchestra and Bavarian State Opera Chorus and is sung in German by Tenor Fritz Wuunderlich, Kurt Bohme (Bass), Raimund Grumbach (Baritone) and Erika Koth (soprano). It is largely believed this performance was also taped by Frize Wunderlich on analogue tapes, and after some restoration, some defects resulting from damage to the original tapes may be audible here.
Set in 19th century Rome, Don Pasquale features comparatively few characters including the title character Don Pasquale an elderly bachelor, Dr. Malatesta, his physician, Ernesto, Don Pasquale’s nephew, Norina Ernesto’s sweetheart and youthful widow, Carlino-Malatesta’s cousin and a notary, and several servants.
