Description: In this episode, we’re listening to Jacques Offenbach’s 3 act opera, Fantasio, with a French language libretto written by Paul de Musset.
Fantasio premiered at the Opera Comique in Paris in 1872 though it only saw 10 performances at its debut venue. The opera bombed largely because of bad timing. Offenback, a german-born Frenchman released the opera shortly after the Franco Prussian war and the opera itself is set in Munich.
The performance of Fantasio presented here was performd by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Opera Rara Chorus in 2013 at the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre in London. Conducted by Sir Mark Elder, this performance features the voice talents of Sarah Connoly as Brenda Rae Russell Braun as the Robert Murray along with other characters playing the roles of Fantasio a student, The King of Bavaria, his daughter the princess Elsbeth, her page Flanel, the Prince of Mantua, Marinoni, the prince’s valet, Sparck, Facio, Max and Hartmann- four and a chorus of gentlefolk, citizens and students.
Unfortunately 'ACTS' don't follow well with broadcast schedules so this one is more awkard than usual with the first act (file 1) ending around 48 minutes in to provide room for your station breaks, IDs and promos.
