Program Title: WINGS #18-21 The Chant That Shook Chile
Description: Starting in 2019, a group known as Las Tesis created a chant against impunity for perpetrators of rape and systemic violence against women. It was performed across Chile in the context of public resistance against the entire regime, and soon was taken up in versions in other languages across the world. In this program, you hear multiple iterations of this chant, and an interview with one of the performers, Dignity Wonderwoman - conducted by Mindy Ran. THIS PROGRAM IS THE WINNER OF THE KATHERINE DAVENPORT AWARD FOR HOTTEST WOMEN'S RADIO NEWS STORY OF 2020. It has been updated to include the victorious referendum on forming a Citizens' Assembly to reform Chile's dictatorship-era Constitution. The deliberative body must be 50% women.
More details: "The patriarchy is a judge, that judges us for being born, and our punishment, is the violence you don't see. ... the cops, the judges, the state, the President - the rapist is you." Words from a translation of a chant that is performed in public by masses of women in synchronization, in Santiago, Chile and hundreds of other cities around the world. It was created by a small group of women known as Las Tesis. A frequent participant explains the performance of "El Violador en Tu Camino" and the unremitting violence that brought it about. Excerpts from performances in Chile, the US, Kashmir, Turkey, Greece, and Kenya.
