Program Title: Sewage Sludge: Fertilizers or Hazardous Waste?
Description: Our sewer system and the use of water to transport our waste has necessitated treatment of the wastewater before being sent to rivers or lakes. Other than the water effluent, the main by-product of the wastewater treatment is sludge, a dewatered solid. What's in sludge depends on what is in the wastewater and the subsequent treatment process. The big question: Is sludge a fertilizer that can be applied on land as it is practiced now in most cities? Or is it a hazardous waste and should be treated as such?

Host(s): Hariyanto Darmawan; aired for Terra Informa on CJSR FM 88.5
Featured Speakers/Guests: Abby Rockefeller, President of the Resource Institute for Low Entropy System, a non-profit organization based in Boston which is concerned about sludge and its application on land
