On Monday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman apologized to Beach but said the league's goal now is to "do what is necessary to continue to move forward." The ripple effects of this case are being felt beyond the NHL. It's part of a long-overdue reckoning of hockey culture over the past several decades.

In the late 1970s, Greg Gilhooly was a rising junior hockey star in Winnipeg when he was sexually abused by his hockey coach, Graham James. Now, the Toronto lawyer and abuse advocate says watching Beach tell his story felt all too familiar: "I'm looking back through a mirror at myself when I see Kyle."
