Description: For this episode we honour a distinguished Newfoundland teacher, songwriter, singer, poet, and writer. A man who wrote his most famous song when he was a mere 15 years old… who in the 1940s became the first Newfoundlander to released commercial recordings… a man whose song was played in Ottawa to mark the entry of Newfoundland into confederation in 1949… who received an honourary doctorate in 1977, was invested in the Order of Canada in 1988, and who had a song inducted into the Canadian songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

The man’s name... ARTHUR REGINALD SCAMMELL. His most famous song… The Squid Jiggin’ Ground.

Tune in for a unique opportunity to hear Scammell’s rarest recordings from 75 years ago. You’ll also hear covers of his songs by LEW MURPHY and ED MCCURDY. And I’ve created a real oddity just for this episode. It’s a montage of nine recording artists who recorded The Squid Jiggin’ Ground including HANK SNOW, GEORGE HAMILTON IV, DICK NOLAN, and a real surprise, ROGER MCGUINN of American folk rockers THE BYRDS!!!!
